This sounds like an interesting patch. Can you provide some details as to
what you've changed in the source? Perhaps other people might benefit from
this, too.

SSH2 connections work with no problem on my machine. I have, however,
noticed that gftp failed more often when certain libraries it depends
on changed. I don't know how active gftp development is, but the current
SSH and FTP look like they're in need of a review.
