Hi, here is a forward of a project to make a Quake-alike game, using a self-written engine. Sounds good. Rob -- Rob Kaper | mail: cap@capsi.demon.nl cap@capsi.com cap@capsi.net | web: http://www.capsi.com/ - icq: 707085 | "Hate you so, love you more, I'm so elastic!"

I've been working with some friends for a while to come out with a 3D action game similar to Marathon or Quake, but we have found a major problem. Designing the graphics, plot, and other story details is time consuming as it is, but we need a high-performance 3D engine for Linux. All the engines we've found are either out-dated (Doom era) or incredibly slow. So the only solutions are to use the Quake2 engine, or write our own. We've decided to write our own. The engine will be completely customizable by using custom graphics, sounds, and other definitions files. The actual 3D rendering engine will be a separate library so that I can be used for other types of games (like Descent style games). On top of the 3D rendering engine sits a graphics driver. The driver is a loadable module (currently we're thinking about SVGAlib, Xlib, OpenGL (3Dfx)). Gamer ----------------------------- User graphics and definitions ----------------------------- 3D rendering engine ----------------------------- Graphics Driver The engine already has a name: Shockwave. This was originally going to be the name of the game, but I feel that the actual game can be put on hold a while. It is more important to get the engine out so we can get other developers interested. I feel that when the Shockwave engine is completed, it will give Linux game developers an edge over Windows. What I can do: I am a programmer and I do write TONS of code, but I usually stick to X stuff and have no real experience in writing games. I have never dealt with SVGAlib or programed in OpenGL. This is why I came here. I'd love to coordinate a project or recrute other game programmers/artists. Shockwave was slowly falling into the background when I got my 3Dfx Voodo2 card and was trying some (about 20) of the games and demos that came with it. I started to think of the application that a 3D game engine would have on linux, not just for Quake-style games, but for Shadow of the Empire or Tomb Raider style games. Then I saw this site and though it a great opportunity to gather artists/programmers/beta testers/etc. I hope that by developing the Shockwave engine, I provide something for other game developers to use. -Andrew _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
