SDL cannot do *anything* by itself (2D or 3D), it always need a "target"
underneath, like Xlib, Svgalib or something like that.

But I confused SDL with the 2D portion of Crystal Space, which has
routines to do 2D with Glide (and can be used separately of the 3D
renderer, which amounts to slow 2D on a blazingly fast 3D card). :-)
