I'm still getting the same error and it's not a modperl problem as this
telnet shows:

root@vodka:/home/http_dev/logs> telnet vodka-int 3306
Trying 208.222.97.130...
Connected to vodka-int.
Escape character is '^]'.
ByHost 'vodka-int' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL
serverConnection closed by foreign host.
