This would eliminate the need for the e-mail address check, if it doesn't go
thorough, delete the user.  Did we just want to generage the people's
usernames using their names so that we don't have the overhead of checking 
through the whole user db to avoid duplicates?  They could still have whatever
handle/nickname they wanted.
