Still serious problems here unfortunately.  Different error message
now.  I updated the CVS, now I probably need the new devball as well,
right?  Where are they currently stored?  I was searching for them
without luck... (even through my mail archive)

I'm happy to write the freeking code if it would work so I could... but
I'm better at coding itself than figuring out how 18 zillion things fit
together. :)  And I have a bad habit of sitting on things for ages when
I get stuck, which is kind of what's been kicking in here....

Also after I updated CVS, functions.php3 had several stray lines in
it... stuff like "<<<<<<<<<<<" and "functions.php3".  Weird.
