Well, my thoughts are a bit different than Aaron's, but worth the same
amount :)

Just thought I'd give ya both sides.  Classes without some form of paper,
I've found to be useless as I can learn the same on my own with a good
book.  

Classes that prep you for a recognized certification are worthwhile IMHO.
Because no matter how much real world experience you have... those tests
are going to throw things at ya that would NEVER come up in a real
enviroment... so these classes help against those questions.

And while I agree with Aaron that the certifications (MCSE, CNE, etc.)
don't really hold a lot of value to the techies of us most of the time...
they do mean something to a lot of pointy-haired bosses out there :)

I pursued my CNE, got to being 2 tests away, then switched jobs and my new
employer didn't want to finish them out cuz Novell didn't mean squat to
them... cuz where I'm at now is all Unix & NT.  I shoulda finished it on
my own but I didn't, and that was Netware 4... I'd have to retake
everything now, so I'm just a lowly CNA4 :).  I'm also 2 tests away from
my MCSE *gag* not because I want it, but because the company wants to pay
for me to get it... and why not?  Next month I'm flying down to NC to
attend the RHCE classes and take the test to get my RHCE.  I don't think I
need the classes, but they don't offer the test on it's own yet.

I'm rambling... point is, that IMHO... the more *CE's you have on your
resume the better... in the eyes of who's decision it usually is on wether
or not to hire you.

I have no college degree and have done incredibly well by going after
these individual certs.
