I don't think that they're that large personally.  Also they look about
the right size to fit in the main nav (left) bar, one on top of the other.
Compared to the logos on freshmeat.net these are tiny.  If space becomes
an issue, we can shrink them later.

I see two different sides:

1)  IE and Netscape don't follow the "standards" so we have to adapt

2)  Just use things that everyone does right, and don't use the other
features.

I think #1 is more work, but may look more professional.  I would suggest
we use the lowest-common denomiator approach unless there is a solid
reason not to.  Ie, we need a feature, and we can't do it without
detecting the browser.  As soon as you start doing JavaScript, you almost
have to do browser detection.
