Comment:

 As a first step, let's do what nickm suggested, and make the asserts non-
 fatal, and add extra logging.

 We might miss a few asserts that way, but at least we won't crash people's
 services.
 (Remember, some people rely on their services to log in to their machines
 and so it's hard for them to retrieve crash logs.)
