 As I said on IRC: I think I'm going to go for Option 1 (u+p) now, because
 of the complexity of blocked or conflicted ports and the current lack of
 support for auto port settings, unix domain sockets and Windows pipes. But
 if we run into big problems patching to upstream Firefox then we can
 revisit the multiple ports/sockets/pipes option. Thanks to everyone for
 the helpful comments!
