 Laptop is an i7, has 8 cpus. Upon page load one cpu goes to 100%. It is
 morning, cooler and I just booted up, so laptop is cool. Cpu stayed at
 100% for about 5 minutes, then the issue seemed to resolve, the cpu went
 down to normal, after which I could browse normally.

 I'll try to test the tor rc version you suggested.
