 (sorry for the delay in responding)

 I re-extracted the tarball, increased the timeout to 10.0 as directed and
 retried, but it didn't seem to make any difference, the connection process
 still hangs for hours as before.

 The meek-client.log file is full of error messages of the form "error in
 handling request: EOF"; they appear at roughly 10 second intervals.
