 Since this appear to be a discussion thread, i will throw in my two cents
 as a newbie here.

 Has it been considered to let a search engine take care of the data
 instead, and let the raw data stay as is (in files)? Both Solr and Lucene
 can be embedded just like jetty into the code. Painful queries like "%a%"
 will always be a bit slow but is still manageable. Lucene/Solr`s filter
 support will make sure that the queries for "fresh data" will go as fast
 as ever even with 10 years of data as mentioned earlier.
