Please check my branch `bug21969_debug` which adds the logs you asked for
and will help debug the non-bridge case!
The branch does all the above items except the last one (log guard desc
fetches) because that was pretty hard to do properly, and would require
non-trivial hacking time. I think the current logging branch has enough
info to help us understand if the theory from comment:15 is what's causing
trouble in the non-bridge case.
