 I need to use port 587 for SMTP because my provider (uberspace.de) tells
 that port 465 is only for incoming mail from another mailserver (sounds
 like a standard that no provider is following ?)
 and find it quite annoying that TorBirdy resets the ports to 465 every
 time I activate it ... think it should do so only when people use
 unencrypted port 25 ??

 But thanks for the hint about "Transparent torification" instead of
 disabling the plugin in cases I don't want to use Tor
