 Sure, go for it.

 I feel like saying "trap" here -- we keep adding defensive programming
 lines because we're not certain what is actually going on, and in the
 future we'll never remember which ones we thought were redundant so we'll
 never be able to take any of them out.

 I guess that means we should schedule this area as one of the prime needs
 for refactoring, in that glorious future when we have time and energy for
 refactoring.
