 This looks like gentoo bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=376515.
 There the users reported that it was fixed when switching to
 libevent-2.0.14.  Perhaps changes in libevent .13 and .14 might provide a
 clue as to what's going on here.
