 So I am happy to report that this issue is now fixed. I investigated some
 more and found another way of handling this. Thanks for reopening this
 ticket!

 I have tested it but you can also test it (rather, should) if you want. If
 you have not done this before: clone the repository
 `https://git.torproject.org/torbirdy.git` and then run `make`. Note that I
 recommend that you create a separate Thunderbird profile to test it/use a
 VM, just in case.

 What I have now done is that we do not select anything (as compared to
 selecting Local Folders). This prevents automatic checking of emails on
 startup ''and'' does not have the side-effect of toggling the Message
 Pane.

 (If you do not want to test it, this will be available in the next release
 and in that case, I will close the ticket.)
