Comment:

 What compiler version is this?

 In 0.3.5, we turned those functions into inline functions in the bytes.h
 header, since they're used all over and they're great inlining candidates.

 I wonder if this is one of those things where old compilers have problems
 with inline functions and linking them when it decides not to inline them.
