Both distributions have different versions of zlib1g, so I dont'assume
your zlib installation is broken.

Are you sure not having a transparent proxy (malware scanner, whatever
thingy) which decompresses
compressed http requests and recompresses them in a wrong way for the
client?
Have you tested this behaviour on a different internet link?
