NNTP (News) traffic is not the same as HTTP (Web) traffic.
Privoxy only handles web traffic.
Just because Privoxy doesn't handle NNTP traffic, doesn't mean you can't use Thunderbird or some other news readers with Tor. Again, JanusVM will make it possible for you to use any TCP based application with Tor.
