I hope whoever designs the 3d sound interface stops by the alsa mailing
list and asks them what there plans are. They are working on a new mixer
interface which will support a larger number of channels. Also hardware 3d
encoded sound was going to be handled through special pcm interfaces, I
believe. But regardless, alsa is the place where hardware 3d sound will be 
supported for Linux, so it seems like a good idea to look at what they're
doing.
