[pygame] usb game controllers

Is there any capability to support USB game controllers on
Linux with pygame (or any other game development system
that you know of?). I keep seeing these things in the
computer stores and wondering if they could be used on
my Linux games. I know my kids would find it interesting.

It's enough if there is a means to do this in a new game ---
I'd be willing to try it experimentally even if no existing
games can use it. But I don't have any idea how to go about
interfacing it. It's not really a pointing device. I
suppose it could be compared to a keyboard device? But
really it's neither.

If I wanted to write a Linux game to use a controller, what
would I have to do?
