Since only 1% of the people are atheists. After all since religion
must be created by people, you should blame the people and not their
religion. 

Isn't atheism a religion too? I suppose you could classify it as a
very severe protesthantic sect that dismisses all rituals and
worship as unpure and evil, the definition seems to fit you well
anyway ;-)
