SDL_mixer includes its "own" static copy of timidity. it appears to be 
an older version as well, so it doesn't support any "TIMID_DIR" like 
you've tried.

i'm submitting a patch now that will have it also try /etc/timidity.cfg 
if there isn't one in the current directory. or use TIMID_DIR if it is set.

this should get rolled out in the next sdl_mixer release. but in the 
meantime i suppose a link is all you can do for now. (or work with cvs 
sdl_mixer once the patch gets in)
