yes, this is the drawback for not using alphas.
if you are using smaller fonts, your best bet might be to find a clean 
TTF file that looks good without smoothing.

heh, i've a feeling that if you wrote the code, they would incorporate 
it. it's not too often people are blitting RGBA to RGBA anyways, so it 
wouldn't hurt performance on things like blitting to the screen. this 
does come up occasionally on the SDL mailing list, so i know it would 
make a couple people happy.
