The lopped-off section says:

Board member Martin Marino suggested closing the West Bank Alternative School,
another cut on earlier lists that the board has avoided so far. The school
serves expelled middle school students.

But Roberts and Karen Barnes argued that schools in East Jefferson should be
targeted for closing before the West Bank school. Marino's district is on the
east bank. Roberts' district is on the West Bank. And Barnes' district is
split by the Mississippi River.

Marino also proposed applying an old, higher tax rate to property values that
have grown since 2000, which could generate almost $3 million. The board
could take that idea up at an Aug. 28 meeting.

Then Roberts raised the idea of simply revising savings estimates from the
already approved teacher cuts. He said it could reveal an additional $1.2
million in savings because administrators used starting salaries and left out
some benefits in their estimates. It would be more than enough to produce the
29-to-1 ratio, he said.

Chief Financial Officer Raylyn Stevens, however, said she will have to
calculate the new savings figure.

The board's vote on the issue was split, with four members voting yes and
three voting no.

Voting yes were Roberts, Quinn, St. Pierre and Gene Katsanis. Voting no were
Barnes, Judy Colgan and Libby Moran. Marino abstained from the vote, and
Barry Bordelon was absent.
