The small 256 MB ThumbDrives were $8.00 each, we'll distribute them next session. I found a great many apps on PortableFreeware.com & the WinPenPack (Italian) website (along w/ many other random app development projects). Many of these are familiar FOSS titles, but what I've found astonishing is the increasing number inexpensive & free software for Windows. 

I've been able to strip down apps like Gnumeric & Scribus to half their original drive space ... even TuxPaint can be taken down to 9 MB using upx & judicious use of the delete button (sorry Bill, but no sound effects, no furrin languages & they can mirror the stamps any way they like... ;-).

FWIW here's what I've been able to fit on a 1 GB stick -- 725 MB formatted using FAT32 512 byte sectors:
