[school-discuss] Info-Society Day

It's not too soon to start planning for
World Telecommunication and Information
Society Day (WISD) which comes on May 17th.
Information on last year's celebration
can be found here:

http://www.itu.int/wisd/2007/index.html

The purpose of the WISD was best summarized
in the United Nations resolution which
provided formal recognition for it:

"To help to raise awareness of the
possibilities that the use of the
Internet and other information and
communication technologies can bring
to societies and economies, as well as
of ways to bridge the digital divide."

The full text of the resolution is here:

http://www.itu.int/wisd/2006/res-60-252.html

Those working with Free and Open Source
technologies can use the occasion to help
promote their activities.

Artists and art educators--whether they are
involved with traditional media, digital
tools, or both--can work on projects
expressing the spirit of the WISD.

The mid-May timing of WISD can provide a
good way to wind up the school year for
many educational institutions.

The major sponsor of WISD is the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU). I haven't seen
anything on their site yet about the 2008
WISD, but you can try contacting them:

Spread the word. . . .

Joel
