Not to dump water on the flames of a potentially good idea, but this feels like a fair amount of additional work with little in the way of payoff.

Keeping the iso up to date is a considerable amount of effort. 

Mailing out CDs is also a ton of work, and would require the additional overhead of tracking sales.

If we were to think about doing this, coming up with a short list of recommended installs (with links to their project pages) could be a start. Then, an iso could be updated at specific intervals. This would have the benefit of making the workload more predictable, but wouldn't address the issues of how to choose what merits inclusion/exclusion, and who would maintain the iso.

None of these are huge issues in and of themselves, but they would require work to get done, and they would need to be done very well - any imperfections would reflect poorly on open source software, through no fault of the software.

Not to say this shouldn't be done, but as with anything worth doing, it will require real effort over time.
