I think this is definitely the direction things are heading, though at
this point I don't think there's enough support available for
a significantly accelerated nationwide rollout. Two years ago my idea
was to convince new schools and districts, and sell them support. At
this point, the schools who were already convinced two years ago still
comprise the vast majority of my consulting business (and permanent
employment), though several more are experimenting and will require
more extensive support within the next couple of years.
But as more and more folks adopt FOSS, support will begin to show up
on the map in a more visible way.
In any case, I think putting together a full-stack team approach with
one or more hardware vendors is a great idea. Symbio Technologies has
a /very/ attractive little thin client that consumes 5W average during
use, so I'd definitely talk to them.
