The Kernel Thing

How about if we do this. Just ship the source for now with a
preconfigured .config file somplace. It is not worth wasting personal
bandwidth at this point on the issue. We can take it up later.

Now. there ARE some things we can do now without an official "core". I
have been thinking about what it is that makes linux so difficult for
beginners to install and have come to the conclusion that it is the nearly
useless default configurations and the need for detailed low-level editing
of config files that is the problem.

Any user (just about) can get a base linux installation. THe problerm
comes in getting PPP and X configured. This is where many prospective
linux users "hit the screen".

Lets try this ... our first priority should be a good workable X
configuration. The second would be a GUI ppp configurator and third a text
PPP configurator.

If we took the current Debian installation and added these three things,
we could have a LOT more linux users.

It looks like we have two goals: 1) Ease of use and 2) standardization.
How about we pick one of these first. Once we get a distribution that is
as easy as Windows to install, we are then ready to start standardizing.
This is not to say that some groundwork can not be lain along the way.

Windows installs as what? VGA by default? It looks pretty. Is there any
reason that we can not install a generic VGA16 configuration that nearly
any card is going to be able to use? I really HATE that grey background.
It makes the thing look so cheap and unfinished.

Enough for now, lets get past the kernel thing and start actually putting
some things together.
