PARDON the intrusion. I know not everyone will be DIRECTLY affected by this, but MOST of you will, directly or indirectly through other systems in use. I just got this alert from MICROSOFT. I am forwarding it because I feel that if they felt it important enough to send to OEM's it should be important enough for y'all. -- I have some sites in need of banners. To our valued NorCal Customers and Partners: Microsoft recently learned of a new variant of the Worm.Explore Zip file that affected many users in June. * The Worm.ExploreZip virus is sent via email and affects MAPI-compliant email applications, including Outlook and Outlook Express. * This virus does not execute automatically and users are only affected if the infected attachment, named "zipped_files.exe", is opened. * Anyone receiving an email with the message body "I received your email and I shall send you a reply ASAP. Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs." should delete it immediately and empty their deleted items. The subject line of the message will vary and may appear to come from a known email correspondent as the virus propagates by replying to a message sent to the infected user. * Several anti-virus companies, including Network Associates and Symantec, have posted updated solutions that will prevent this virus. The Norton coverage is at <http://vil.nai.com/vil/vpe10450.asp>. The Symantec coverage can be found at: <http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/worm.explorezip.pack.html>. * Microsoft is strongly committed to security and we're working closely with the anti-virus community, partners and customers to ensure the security of our customers. How harmful is this virus? This is a malicious virus that will search all local drives for the following file types: .doc, .xls, .ppt, .asm, .cpp, .h. or .c. Once these files are found, they are deleted. What type of virus is this? This is a 32bit worm virus that travels through email. It is a compressed version of the original Worm.Explore Zip virus. Who can be affected? The virus can be transmitted through any MAPI-compliant email application, including Outlook and Outlook Express. Windows 9x and Windows NT users can be affected. Has Microsoft been affected? Microsoft has not been affected by this virus. Microsoft updated its email gateways to provide protection from the virus and the updated anti-virus software was made available to employees as soon as the solution was created. All employees were notified via email and voicemail and encouraged to update their anti-virus protection.
