It uses (I think) something called hexile compression.  It's not bad; it's
not great.  Shrug.  Towards the end of my last job, when I didn't have
much real work left to do, I would play around with VNC.  I had one VNC
session set up that was a copy of xbiff, and nothing else.  No window
manager.  Nothing except a 48x48 pixel Xvnc session running xbiff.  The
performance was lightning quick... :)
