**apologies, I am coming into this thread a little late**

You can simply start at Freshmeat.net or Sourceforge.net (and others)
and pick up some of the more well-dev'd packages and put them on a
single disc for cl00bies to get into.  We have an installer in house
thats being worked on that lets you pick packages and it checks
dependencies and then installs the packages....as opposed to doing
./configure/make/make install et al.
