The files that we specify for NIS export (i.e, remote use) are passwd,
group, hosts, rpc, services, protocols, mail, shadow, and gshadow.

The directories just tell NIS where to find the files--it doesn't actually
export them.

To export directories, you have to use NFS--an entirely different server.
