 Pushed a bug5623 branch to my arma.

 From your comment I worry that you may be misinterpreting my question: the
 new behavior is that we *do* return 1 earlier in the function in this
 case.

 Though after some more thought, I think this is not a reasonable place to
 spot-check whether there's some bug that allowed us to use a node in
 excludenodes.
