I have been considering variations on this idea. The problem is that
toolbars, menus, and so on can result in many different maximized content
sizes. So it's not clear to me what the best preferred size would be.
One possible future improvement would be a C++ patch for Firefox that
allows more granular zooming levels. Then we could more precisely fill the
height of the screen when the window is maximized.
