 OP update: it appears maybe a popup may be the problem. It happens for
 example when clicking inside a topix.com message window. When using normal
 Firefox this pops up.

 with an add.

 With the TBB it hangs for a while. Could it be a NoScript setting? Usually
 in the TBB it will just hang, but once there was a popup that slipped
 through: "Zoosk - Tor Browser" but the window was black and the add did
 not appear.
