Holy cow, turns out this has been the implementation since before 1.0! I
actually had no idea about this...
That being said, I think that .a and .lib files are equivalent for the
purposes of `ld` or w/e MinGW linker is being used (we just pass the .lib
files to the linker). Have you found they don't work though? If they don't
then we can surely get a fix in!
