Comment (by catalyst):

 ahf is still working on modifying the protocol between the PT and tor to
 report additional status, possibly through stdout or stderr.  Additional
 work that is mostly independent of this can include reporting the PT
 progress indications that we could already have access to without protocol
 changes.  At least we could make connecting to the SOCKS port of the proxy
 a separate phase from connecting to the PT bridge.
