Comment (by downie):

 Compiling with gcc-4.2 worked (I was prompted to disable 'stack
 protection' whatever that is (What does it protect it from? Bears?) so
 hope that's ok). Something in the new Tor is incompatible with gcc-4.0.
 Something to do with those 'redundant declarations'?
