 After dumping both files into a vanilla Firefox source tarball in
 browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins I built a basic dev build (./configure
 --disable-crash-reporter && make -j8). The good news is that the altered
 google.xml was updated.

 The bad news was that the ddg xml did not seem to be included in the
 resulting build. There probably is some build script that copies these
 files into the resulting dist directory. Grepping the source seems to find
 a few Makefiles referencing the dir, but they don't seem to have a list of
 files to include that I can find easily by grepping for existing
 filenames..
