Yes, it is indeed worth having a less beautiful spec in order to keep
backward compatibility. Backward compatibility is a real thing that can
affect human beings who are trying to use our software, after all. Nobody
is going to care whether our spec says "Then truncate this to 16 bytes" in
comparison with that.
