Good point -- let's stick with using the DirPort, but let's still change
(both DocTor and DepicTor) to fetching the microdesc consensus (or fetch
both, that's fine too), and most importantly, let's change them to
requesting compression for the http requests.
For context, I believe that my Tor is including this header in its http
request:

Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip, identity
}}}
and then of course it gets a thing back that is deflated or gzipped or
something and it uncompresses it.
