 Sorry Nick, I've been neglecting this for too long.

 I actually fixed most of the outstanding items from my last post, the only
 thing left to do is more testing of non-trivial routing code that I don't
 fully understand. I'm keen to write these tests but I may need specific
 guidance in some cases. I'm going to rebase this branch onto current
 master, and then make a single patch file with the whole set of changes.
 Is this how you'd like the patch?
