Comment (by tom):
I spoke with aklotz about this. This is almost certainly third party
code; probably Comodo but potentially something else on the user's
machine.
The crashes are likely happening on process start. The best way to try and
diagnose this would be to figure out the dll's loaded by the process.
I think the easiest and most detailed way to collect this information
would be to use Process Monitor. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-
us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
You can set process monitor to record only events for the Tor Browser
process; and you can omit the registry and network connection event types
and record only process and filesystem activity.
Collect a log of the process starting up and crashing (ideally as quickly
as possible, so there's not a ton of events to sift through - you can
clear the log and try a few times if needed.) The value of
browser.tabs.remote.autostart should not matter as long as the process
crashes - set it to whatever will make it crash fastest.
This log should show dll load events (and the corresponding location they
come from) that would help us figure out what the offending program is.
It would be great if this could be done after Comodo is uninstalled to
remove that from the equation. (It could be that Comodo lingers after you
uninstall it, or something else is on the system.)
This log will have personal data in it: your operating system username for
certain, and potentially other machine characteristics. It should not
contain browsing history, MAC address, IP Address or other highly personal
information; but none the less I wouldn't want you to post it online.
I'll gk confirm this is an acceptable path forward and provide details on
how to provide the data safely and who at Tor will have access to it.
