I think existing exit statistics collecting is probably fine for our
needs. Publishing the collected statistics would be beneficial. However,
at some point, the Internet will run over port 80 and 443 and our stats
will be non-beneficial.
Part of what this ticket is getting at is to push the field forward and
find a way to be able to identify and classify protocols in a privacy
preserving way. There have been at least three studies (Univ. Colorado-
Boulder, INRIA.fr, and UNLV) that have attempted to record exit traffic
and publish data about the collected stats. These are the ones we know
about.
Exit relay operators have recorded traffic and tried to tell us
anonymously about the protocols they've seen transit through their exit
relay.
