Comment:

 Hi. The problem you described ("proxy server refusing connections") seems
 to indicate that you don't have Tor running. TorBirdy requires Tor; this
 can be achieved by running the Tor Browser Bundle in the background and
 then starting Thunderbird with TorBirdy.

 We have started work on a Tor Mail bundle that will do away with the need
 of running Tor separately, but for now, you need to have Tor running and
 the easiest way to do it is with the Tor Browser Bundle, described above.
