 This is the only option required to make things work cleanly:
  --disable-gcc-hardening
 I necessarily use static, and via the more commonly seen configure
 'environment' approach:
  CPPFLAGS=-static LDFLAGS=-static ./configure
 Behaviour without -static, or with any/all of --enable-static-*, is as yet
 untested.
